Hi,
Is it workable to use datasets with templates in Power BI?
I currently have 90 reports that all use a template pbix but different semantic models for each but are exactly the same - With all of the refreshes this isn't ideal.
I have a PBIX file that I export as a template and it pops up with a parameter when the file opens, but this is all set in the advanced editor. When you use datasets and select Transform data to add the parameter it says "To make changes to your model, you'll need to switch to a DirectQuery connection. This requires adding a local model to your file and is a permanent change".
What is the best way around this?
Thanks
Hi, @lherbert501
According to your description, you exported the .pbix file as a template, but got an error when you opened the template and added parameters after converting the data. In fact, the generated template saves the report page, visual objects, and other visual object elements; the data model definitions, including schemas, relationships, metrics, and other model definitions; and all the query definitions such as the query, query parameters, and other query elements; but it does not save the report data. report data. Upon opening the report template a dialog box may pop up that asks for the values of all parameters defined in the report on which the template is based, and after any required parameters are provided, the system prompts for the location of the underlying data associated with the report. The current report creator can then connect to the data based on their credentials.

But based on your error message, I can presume that your report template can use Query Parameter, but when you connect to the data source with Live Connection after using the template application, the mode does not support Query Parameter, you can change your connection mode. If you have any questions about this question, feel free to ask anything about it.

Hi @Anonymous
Thanks so much for your reply.
I've tried to show it better in the image below.
I want it to be able to use a template so that if there is a need to change the visuals then I don't have to change every one. This is done before exporting to PBIT.
I also want to use a dataset so if I have to make a change to the code it affects all customers. Currently it looks like it has to be one or the other.
