Selection property not available in matrix visual

In Power BI matrix visual, there is no option to change the border properties for a selected cell.

The visual is highlighted as below:

Upon selecting any value on the visual, the left-most area of the row gets a highlighted border along-with the cell which has been selected.

Is there any visual property/setting which can be made available in the visual to manipulate the appearance of the border (upon selection)?

Hi @Sukesham ,

Thanks for posting your query in the Microsoft Fabric Community.

This is a known limitation in Power BI's matrix visual. When you select a cell, Power BI automatically applies a highlight effect, including a border around the selected cell and a left-edge highlight on the row. Unfortunately, there's no built-in option to customize or remove this selection border.

If the default border feels distracting or doesn’t fit your report’s design, you can try adjusting the matrix formatting settings. Changing background colors or gridlines might help reduce its visibility. Alternatively, you could explore different visuals or custom visuals from the Power BI marketplace, which offer greater flexibility in selection behavior and formatting.

Hi @Sukesham

There  currently isn't an option to change the property of a selected cell in a matrix. I believe you've already raised this as an idea.

Hi  @Sukesham

Currently, Power BI does not allow directly customize the border that appears when selecting a cell in a matrix visual. The highlight applies to both the selected cell and the entire row automatically, with no settings to adjust thickness, color, or style.

If you need more control, you can try:

  • You can use conditional formatting to change cell colors instead.
  • You can use third-party custom matrix visuals  they might offer more granular control over selection/highlight appearance.
