Folks I was just looking at the reprot built by @WillT and described in this blog post here from March 19, 2018
Under the Navigation Bookmarks section there's a picture showing the Selection pane (you can also download the pbix file)
It seems Items have indeed been Renamed in the Selection Pane - does anyone know how this was done?
There's an Idea about this already
Is this an upcoming feature not yet generally available?

In fact, selection panel display visual titles, so you can simply rename items in selection panel by setting custom visual titles.

I was trying to rename in the Selection Pane by right-clicking the names generated by PBI.
I hope in the future they allow us to do this.
Similar to how we can rename a Measure only for a specific visual without actually affecting the real name of the Measure.
Like described here... but for the Visual names in the Selection Pane
