Save pbx file without data

Hello

I have a dataset with sensitve Data in import mode. Currently I can't switch to direct query or direct lake.

I do not have a data protection compliant storage location for the pbx file. Therefore I need a solution to avoid unauthorized data access.
Is there a possibility to automatically save the dataset without loaded data or to force an update when opening the file in the desktop app?

I’d appreciate any input or idea.

Thanks for your help!

Hi   @MegV

As suggested above,

what is PBIT file ?

A PBIT file is a Power BI Template file created by Power BI Desktop, a Microsoft application used for creating reports and visualizations. The PBIT file contains queries, visualization settings, data models, and report layouts, but it does not include the actual data. This makes it ideal for sharing report templates without exposing sensitive data

You can create a PBIT file by selecting File > Export > Power BI Template in Power BI Desktop. When someone else uses the template, they can connect it to their own data sources to generate a complete report

Hi @MegV

Try saving the file as pbit which saves the file with the pages, visuals and visual elements, data model definition, etc. but without the data. Note: user will be prompted for the raw data's location upon opening it. https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/create-reports/desktop-templates

To address your concern about sensitive data in your PBIX file, here are some solutions:

  1. Save PBIX Without Data: In Power BI Desktop, go to File > Options and Settings > Options > Current File > Data Load and select Clear cache. Then, go to File > Save As and save the file. This removes the loaded data but keeps the model and queries.

  2. Force Update on Open: In Power BI Desktop, use Parameters to ensure the queries require user input or credentials on file open, preventing data from being loaded without authorization.

  3. Use a Script or Tool:  Consider using Power BI REST API or PowerShell scripts to automate removing data from the PBIX file before saving.

  4. Restrict File Access: If avoiding sensitive data isn't fully possible, encrypt the PBIX file with a secure tool before storage to prevent unauthorized access.

These steps should help secure your PBIX file while maintaining usability. Let me know if you need further guidance!
