SQL connector error: 'Binding protocol error due to unexpected package format.'

Hello everyone -- wondering if you could help? I'm trying to connect to MYSQL and get the following error -

Details: "An error occurred while reading provider data: 'Handshake failed due to an unexpected package format.'"

I can connect through Workbench, but I can't figure out why I can't connect via PBI.

Any ideas?

Thank you!

Hi @Anonymous ,

You may connect to the MySQL data using  MySQL database connector, see the detail: Connect Power BI with MySQL Database.

Follow the steps, there may be a warning "The connector requires one or more additional components to be installed before it can be used." In this Case - Click Learn More link and it will direct to MySQL connector for the .net page: https://dev.mysql.com/downloads/connector/net/. Install this and restart the computer.

Best Regards,

Thanks for your reply Amy, @v-xicai

I have installed the connector - although it is the 32bit - we have the 64bit PBI - does that matter? There doesn't seem to be an option for the 64bit connector.

Any other ideas?

thank you again!

Hi @Anonymous ,

The 32-bit connector is enough, and you can use it with 64-bit Desktop. Please follow the steps in link Connect Power BI with MySQL Database.

If you still have this issue for Power BI, you'd better create a support ticket in Power BI Support , Scroll down and click "CREATE SUPPORT TICKET", to get further help.
