Hi @askrajeev

Thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Fabric Community Forum.

This issue is commonly related to compatibility between the SAP BW system and the Power BI SAP connector after an SAP Kernel upgrade. Here are some bullet points that can help you troubleshoot and resolve

  • Confirm that SAP NetWeaver RFC SDK version installed on the Power BI gateway or client machine is compatible with the upgraded SAP Kernel.

  • Power BI uses the SAP .NET Connector (NCo) or SAP NetWeaver RFC Library internally; mismatches here can cause disconnections.

  • Ensure the SAP BW connection settings in Power BI are still valid post-upgrade (e.g., system ID, application server, instance number).

  • Check whether the SAP BW system now requires a newer SNC (Secure Network Communication) setup or certificate.

  • If you are using DirectQuery, test with Import mode to isolate if the issue is query-execution related or connection related.

  • Update the on-premises data gateway to the latest version if it hasn't been updated post-kernel upgrade.

  • Look at SAP application logs (ST22, SM21) for dumps or logs related to RFC or external system connections to identify exact issues.

  • Test the connection using SAP Logon Pad or SAP GUI with the same credentials — this can validate basic connectivity.

  • Check with your SAP Basis team whether RFC parameters or services changed as part of the kernel upgrade.

  • Use tools like SAP Gateway Ping or RFC SDK Test Tool (rfcexec.exe) to test raw connectivity from the Power BI machine.

  • Attaching Microsoft’s documentation on SAP connectivity with Power BI:

Hi @askrajeev ,

The RETURN CODE DEALLOCATED NORMAL error you're encountering after the SAP Kernel upgrade typically points to a session or connection termination issue between Power BI and SAP BW. This can happen due to protocol or compatibility mismatches introduced during the kernel upgrade. A few steps you can take include verifying that the SAP NetWeaver RFC SDK version used by the Power BI SAP BW connector is still compatible with the new kernel version.

Also, ensure that the Power BI SAP BW connector is up to date, as Microsoft occasionally releases updates to maintain compatibility with SAP changes. You might also want to check if Single Sign-On (SSO) settings or network security policies were impacted by the upgrade. If the issue persists, enabling detailed logging in Power BI and SAP can help pinpoint the root cause. Coordinating with your SAP Basis team to review logs on the SAP side when the error occurs could also provide valuable insight.

Hi @askrajeev

Issue sounds directly related to the Kernel upgrade. Check the following:

  • Verify the RFC destination in SM59 – test the connection and check for any auth issues.

  • Make sure Power BI connection details (System ID, instance number, router string) didn’t change after the upgrade.

  • If you’re using OLE DB for OLAP, confirm you're on the latest version of the connector (both SAP and Power BI side).

  • Try connecting via another tool like SAP Analysis for Office to see if it's a general issue or Power BI-specific.

  • Check if there’s any SAP Note related to your Kernel version – sometimes upgrades break compatibility.

If none of this helps, you’ll likely need to raise it with SAP and include traces (ST01, Gateway logs).

If this post helps, then please consider Accepting it as the solution to help the other members find it more quickly.

Please check following points to make sure everthing running as expect after Kernel Upgrade,

  • Update SAP NetWeaver RFC SDK

    • Install the latest compatible RFC SDK on the machine running Power BI.

  • Update or Reinstall SAP BW OLE DB Provider

    • Ensure the OLE DB for OLAP provider matches your new SAP Kernel version.

  • Check ODBC DSN Settings

    • Reconfigure the DSN connection used by Power BI to match new SAP settings.

  • Restart Power BI & SAP Services

    • After updates, restart Power BI and relevant SAP gateway services.

  • Review SAP Notes

    • Search for recent SAP Notes related to BW/Power BI connectivity issues post-upgrade.

Thanks,
Bhavin
