SAMEPERIODLASTYEAR and field not found

Hello,

I am following along on a tutorial using my own data.  I am trying to create a SameperiodLastYear measure, but the intellisence can not find the function SamePeriodLastYear and it also states that the column BeginMonth does not exist in my view, yet I see it.
Can you tell me what I am doing wrong? Thanks

I think I may have found why.  This table View is a Direct Query from a SQL Database.  I think I read there are limited functions that will work with Direct Queries. Does anyone know this to be true?  Is there a way to get sameperiodlastyear without using the function? Thanks
