Query Editor preview reloads all previous steps after an edit even if nothing changed

I have a relatively complex PowerQuery with a few queries that merge. Every time I make any change in Query Editor it reloads all previous steps. As these come from many sources, it can take up to 5 minutes before I can make any more edits every time. For example, adding a Cutom Column with a very simple formula of "= 1", it begins reloading all previous steps. As nothing has changed, this slows me down when using PowerQuery Query Editor considerably.

Is there a way to change a query's setting so that preview doesn't automatically rerun all previous steps in all upstream queries when there is any downstream change?

I haven't seen anyone post on this exactly, which surprises me, as this is quite an issue for how I use PowerBI.

  • Hi dgarmat,

As I know, currently it is not supported to disable the automatically rerun of previous steps.

So I think you can submit an Idea for a feature request.

    Thanks,
    Xi Jin.

      Thanks v-xjiin-msft.

Sorry, marked as solution at first, but this issue still prevents me from using PowerBI as a tool for data munging. If it takes 5-10 minutes for Query Editor to refresh and reload all data that hasn't changed before I can add another step, I may forget the next few steps I had in mind. This reloading of all previous data may save on memory, but to prevent preview and additional edits until all previous steps are re-run makes Query Editor unusuable for my data munging workflow.

Agreed, this is a horrible situation.  Has there been any resolution to this yet??
