Problem uploading my model from Service with incremental loading

Good afternoon

I am having trouble loading the model once I have performed and followed the incremental loading steps since the local model of my model (even if it is a premium user category) has exceeded 1GB of model.
https://learn.microsoft.com/es-es/power-bi/connect-data/incremental-refresh-overview
As the documentation says, some parameters should be established so that from the local it only takes into account the day you specify, in my case 2 and from the archive to 3 previous years.

Once all this I have done locally. I have published it and I have taken it to Service, where you have to do a manual reload, so that the model makes its partitions in the Service.

But I am running into a problem in the recharge since it exceeds the courtesy time, throwing this error at me.

I don't know if anyone has been in this similar situation, because I have done all the steps but I have the problem when loading the model.

Thank you very much for any help

Good afternoon

Thank you very much for the message

Following your advice and the documentation, I go to Data model configuration and I get this, not giving me the option to choose Large model storage format.

On the other hand I have the Pro user and not premium, but I deduce that Pro will be better.

I don't understand where I can activate the big data models tab.

Thanks a lot

Hi @Syndicate_Admin

Based on the screenshot you provided, I see that the Large Model Storage Format option is not available. This feature is only available in Power BI Premium or Premium Per User (PPU) workspaces.

Since you are currently using a Power BI Pro license, the Large Model Storage Format setting will not be accessible. Power BI Pro does not support large semantic models, as this capability is specifically designed for Premium capacities to handle larger datasets efficiently.

If you find this post helpful, please mark it as an "Accept as Solution" and give a KUDOS.

Thank you!

Good

migueldfr_0-1743171288335.png

This is my license currently.

On the other hand I would like to know that I am the administrator of Power Bi and the one who prepares reports if any worker wants to view and only view a report should he have some license added or is the free one enough?

Thanks a lot

Hi @Syndicate_Admin

Based on your latest screenshot, you have a Premium Per User (PPU) license, which supports the Large Model Storage Format. However, this feature must be enabled in a PPU workspace and will not be available in a Pro workspace. If your workspace is not assigned to Premium or PPU capacity, this setting will remain inaccessible.

Regarding your second question:

  1. If a worker only needs to view reports, a Power BI Free license is sufficient, but only if the report is shared in a Power BI Premium workspace.
  2. If your workspace is PPU (Premium Per User), then all users who need to view the report must also have a PPU license.

Thank you!

Understood, thank you very much.

In relation to the second answer, it can be PPU or pro for other users, right?

Hi @Syndicate_Admin

If your workspace is PPU (Premium Per User), then all users who need to view the report must also have a PPU license, a Pro license alone will not be sufficient.

However, if the workspace is in Premium Capacity (not PPU), then both Pro and Free users can view the report.

Thank You!

So if I downgrade for the main user who has PPU to pro, everyone else will be able to see the report if they have pro.

Can it be like this?

Because Premium by capacity is not an option, and hiring 5 PPU should be avoided, what can I do in that case?

Thanks a lot

Hi @Syndicate_Admin

If you downgrade from PPU to Pro, your workspace will no longer be a PPU workspace, and the reports will not be accessible to other Pro users unless they are shared in a non-PPU workspace.

Since Premium Capacity is not an option and you want to avoid multiple PPU licenses, you can move the reports to a Pro workspace.

If all users (including viewers) have a Pro license, you can publish and share reports within a Pro workspace. Move the reports to a Pro workspace. This will require all viewers to have a Pro license (Power BI Free users will not be able to access the reports).

Thank You!

Hello @Syndicate_Admin

Thank you for reaching out to the Microsoft Community Forum.

The error message indicates that the dataset refresh is timing out due to long-running queries or exceeding the Power BI Service’s resource limits. Since you're working with Incremental Refresh:

Premium capacity allows datasets to exceed 1 GB, but this requires enabling the Large model storage format.

Enable Large Model Storage Format:
Go to the Power BI Service, navigate to the workspace containing the dataset, access Dataset Settings, toggle Large Model Storage Format to On, and click Apply. After enabling, attempt the manual refresh again to see if it resolves the timeout.

The timeout likely occurs because the initial refresh in the Service attempts to process all 3 years of historical data to create partitions, which exceeds the refresh time limit (typically 5 hours in Premium, though it can vary). To work around this:

In Power BI Desktop, go to Transform Data > Manage Parameters, temporarily set RangeStart and RangeEnd to a smaller range (e.g., last 1 day), apply the filter to your date column, and republish the dataset to the Power BI Service.

In the Power BI Service, trigger a manual refresh. Since the dataset now contains minimal data, it should complete quickly and establish the partition structure.Once the initial refresh succeeds, adjust the refresh policy to include the full 3 years of historical data.

If my response has resolved your query, please mark it as the Accepted Solution to assist others. Additionally, a 'Kudos' would be appreciated if you found my response helpful.

Thank you!

Good morning

Thank you very much for the answer

Replying to this issue I am in Service and I am going to this screen but I cannot find anywhere Large model storage format, I do not know if I am doing something wrong.

migueldfr_0-1742983541081.png

Answering this, I go to the report again and activate the Incremental Update by putting this data

migueldfr_2-1742990590173.png

Now I publish it back to service and throw a manual update, once that manual update is finished, I should change the policy where?
"Adjust the update policy to include the full 3 years of historical data."

I don't know if I'm following the steps well according to what you say.

I appreciate any help

Thanks a lot

Hi @Syndicate_Admin

I understand that you have been checking in the Report Settings for the Large Model Storage Format option. As I mentioned in my previous response dataset settings it means in Power BI the Semantic Model was previously known as a Dataset. This setting needs to be enabled at the Semantic Model level rather than in the Report Settings.

Please refer to the reference document below, which provides more detailed information on how to enable this option.
