Powerbi Desktop installation Failed

When I download the latest version of PowerBI Desktop 64 bit and try to install I get as far as accepting the licence terms and conditions and then when the actual install commences I get a strange error. Although I anm running the MSI from my C: drive, it tells me that the MSI is on a network resource that is not available. Can anyone explain why this might be  happening? I'm quite prepared to belive it is something on my PC but the message is not very helpful and is saying something that seems not to be true.

Here is a screenshot of the error message.

I've have clicked OK but it just comes up again and again until I cancel.

It even shows a C:\ drive folder in the User Source field. Any clues as to what I can check would be appreciated.

Thanks.

I am not 100% sure

But what you could do, is try the installation with Verbose logging into a log file.

This link below should assist to log all the information.

Then once you view the log I am sure it will point you in the right direction?

I would also ensure that you have got the minimum requirements installed.

Especially .NET 4.5

hi @EvanYates

Are you able to try and install this on another PC?

If it works with no issues with the same file on another PC then I would assume that there is potentially is an issue on your PC? I personally have never had any issues with regards to the installation.

Thanks for taking the time to reply.

Yes, I can install it on another machine, which means it probably is a problem on this particular PC.

Any idea on what problems would cause the install to fail in this manner? What should I look at to determine what needs changing? The PC is patched and updated regularly so it should be all up to date. I have admin rights to the PC so I don't think it is privileges.

I'm running Windows 7 Professional SP1 on this PC. I had to try the install on a PC that runs Windows 8 (which worked ok).

Does the OS version make a difference? As long as they are both 64-bit and patched and updated, I would have thought it shouldn't matter. Power BI is the only app I'm experiencing this with.

I am not 100% sure

Hi guavaq

Thanks for your help that MSIEXEC log proved useful. It looks like some Cached Installer files from the initial install have gone missing. I'm going to try uninstalling and reinstalling Power BI Desktop from scratch.

Thanks Again

Hi @EvanYates

Were you able to resolve this.  I have the same issue and get the same message when trying to uninstall the older version on my PC.  So can't uninstall or install

I did solve this, but it was just by completely uninstalling and re-installing PowerBI Desktop.

I didn't do anything special beyond that.

My company's Service Desk suggested wiping and re-imaging the PC from scratch if the uninstall didn't work, but luckily it didn't come to that. You might be able to remove PowerBI Desktop by manually deleting files and editing the Registry but that is a bit scary.

Sorry I can't provide much more than that...
