PowerBI & Spatial Data Questions
Hi residentx,
Thanks for sharing the screenshots and explaining the requirement clearly. Now I understand you are mainly trying to highlight ZIP code regions with different colors for analysis purpose.
Power BI can work with ZIP/postal codes, but some map visuals depend on online map services and tenant configuration. Because of this, the behavior may feel different compared to older Power Map/Excel experiences.
Also, as mentioned by danextian , if you need exact boundary-level control for every ZIP area, then Shape Map with TopoJSON/shapefiles may be needed in some scenarios.
Official Microsoft documentation for reference:
Create Shape Map Visualizations in Power BI Desktop (Preview) - Power BI | Microsoft Learn
Please continue your testing and share the results. Your screenshots were very helpful in understanding the scenario.

v-hjannapu I appeciate the follow-up. Change at times is difficult. In the past, I spent time to learn these products at one time I achieved mastery on Excel and PowerBI. Now they are changing again. The good news is that I was planning to retraining on Microsoft products but in the fall but this issue with Geospatial has kind of pushed up my timelines. We're heading into a holiday weekend so I'll dive deeper into this. I
Moving along, I need your comments on the following comments:
1. After my last comment, I got an email with links to the dashboard in a day stuff. I'm going to buffet them over the next 30 days. Do you have any say into the group that created this program here, https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/power-platform/training-workshops
Can you ask them to create a program (Maps in a day) just for Maps?
Microsoft had a good mapping solution in Excel and I used it confidently for a long time. When I needed to created geospatial stuff, I headed to Excel first for Power Map and Power View but Microsoft has killed those products. Since I couldn't find it there, I went to PowerBI and Microsoft has revamped the features so much that I can't find the solutions to my problems.
2. Which brings me to this question, are the maps features in all Office365/M365 tenants just certain ones?
I have a personal and corporate (E3) tenant and even using copilot/chatgpt, I couldn't find how to activate the maps. The instructions told me by the AI was just wrong. Is the maps only in corporate "M365" or in O365. If I can't figure this out then I may have to go back to ESRI.

Hi residentx ,
Unfortunately, we do not have direct influence over the Microsoft training workshop roadmap, but your suggestion for a dedicated “Maps in a Day” workshop is honestly very reasonable. I suggest you raise your feedback around the geospatial experience and discoverability in Microsoft Fabric Ideas since Microsoft does actively review customer feedback there.
Regarding your tenant question, the standard map visuals are not limited only to corporate M365 tenants. They are generally available across both personal and corporate environments, but availability and behaviour can vary depending on tenant settings, regional policies, licensing, preview features and how the environment is configured. That is also why AI-generated guidance can sometimes be inconsistent or outdated, especially since Microsoft has moved and renamed some of these settings over time. Your approach of revisiting the older files and comparing workflows is probably a good path forward here, especially since you already have prior experience with the Microsoft geospatial stack.

Hi residentx,
Could you please confirm if you've submitted this as an idea in the Ideas Forum? If so, sharing the link here would be helpful for other community members who may have similar feedback.

v-hjannapu This is my final comment on this post. The US Census had it's first GeoForum this past week and the videos will post here shortly. The Fabric team should view some of these videos to see the evolution and strategy of their Geo Products. https://www.census.gov/programs-surveys/geography/events/geoforum.html

Hi residentx,
Thanks for sharing the information regarding the US Census GeoForum. Resources like these can definitely be valuable for users working with geospatial analysis and evolving mapping technologies. They also provide useful insight into broader Microsoft industry direction and real-world geospatial use cases, which can help inform future documentation, guidance and learning content around mapping experiences.
If you have any other issues, please feel free to create new posts here in the community, We are always happy to help.
