PowerBI Desktop project under control version

Currently, at my company, we have several PowerBI reports that we frequently modify and deploy without any control on the modifications we make.

We would like to have the projects for all of these reports under some control version, so that changes made in the past are stored and we can revert to any past version if needed.

I have found two common ways to achieve a kind of control version for PowerBI projects. The first one consists in saving the .pbix files in OneDrive or SharePoint, which allow to see the version history of uploaded files with the same names. The second one consists in generating the .pbit files of reports, which contain only the definition of the report (making the files to control much less heavy in comparison with the .pbix files, which also contain the dataset for the reports).

Is any of these approaches good enough for our purpose or is there any better way to have PowerBI projects with a control versioning?
