Power BI drill-through and slicer synchronization

Hello Power BI community,

I have a problem with drill-through and slicer not being synchronized and would like to understand this behavior and also see if anyone found a work around.

The configuration is the following:

  • Page A has a matrix with data for all business units (more than 2) in the organization.
  • Page B show some details for one business unit and has single select radio button slicer for business units
  • There is a drill through from Page A to Page B defined on business unit

Lets take following scenario:

Slicer on Page B has "Business Unit 2" selected. From Page A I drill through using "Business Unit 1". The expectation is of course that Page B slicer selection changes to  "Business Unit 1" and all the other business units are on the list for selection.

I get instead a conflict between the slicer and drill-through filter and the slicer looks like this, only showing 2 options:

There is no data shown, but when I select "Business Unit 1" in the slicer, data shows as expected and slicer looks like below.

To be able the get all other options back on the slicer, I need to reset the drill-through filter.

Is this a bug or just a consequence of how these functions are implemented. The slicer seems to have dependency on the drill-through filter, just not showing the filter value.

The recommendations I have seen are to use a multi-select slicer on the target page and default it to "Select all" option. Alternatively, the user have to select the drill-through value in the slicer.

None of these are user friendly, covering all use cases.

I wonder if there is a work-around for this, I am also looking to understand the reason for this behavior.

Typically for drill-through pages, you're better off hiding the page, so you can only navigate to it via drill-through.

Then, my recommendation would be to remove the Business Unit slicer from the target page as this will be passed from the source page.

If you need this detail page to also be usable without drill through, duplicate the page and have all required slicers on it.

Alternately, check and see if turning off the 'Keep all filters' on the target page can get you closer to what you want.

Doing this will mean that only the Business Unit is passed to the target.

Thank you @KNP ,

I appreciate taking your time and answering my question.

Your answer confirms what I suspected, having an alternate drill-through page is an interesting idea.

Steven

Hi @Anonymous,

How did the sync slicer settings? Have you enabled the options to interaction with other filters? You can refer to the following document to find these advanced options:

Hello Xiaoxin,

Thank you for taking time answering my question.

Regarding interaction settings, the slicer on the drill-through target page interacts with all visualizations on the page.

The Business Unit slicer is not synced with any other slicer.

I hope I answered all the questions,  please let me know if additional information is needed.

Thanks

Steven
