Power BI desktop won't start
Thanks everyone for your help,
The problem seemed to be with the Windows 10 anniversary update, which broke not just Power BI, but also my SQL installation on my laptop.
After trying for a few days to fix everything, I did an OS reinstallation and everything is fine now.
Thanks Michael,
I get 7 application errors which may be relevant.
First 3 are from Perflib:
- The Collect Procedure for the "DTSPipelinePerf120.dll" service in DLL "DTSPipeline120" generated an exception or returned an invalid status. The performance data returned by the counter DLL will not be returned in the Perf Data Block. The first four bytes (DWORD) of the Data section contains the exception code or status code.
- The Open Procedure for service "Lsa" in DLL "C:\Windows\System32\Secur32.dll" failed. Performance data for this service will not be available. The first four bytes (DWORD) of the Data section contains the error code.
- The Open Procedure for service "MSDTC" in DLL "C:\WINDOWS\system32\msdtcuiu.DLL" failed. Performance data for this service will not be available. The first four bytes (DWORD) of the Data section contains the error code.
Then from PerfNet:
- Unable to open the Server service performance object. The first four bytes (DWORD) of the Data section contains the status code.
Then Perflib again:
- The Open Procedure for service "WmiApRpl" in DLL "C:\WINDOWS\system32\wbem\wmiaprpl.dll" failed. Performance data for this service will not be available. The first four bytes (DWORD) of the Data section contains the error code.
Then from MSOLAP$AnalysisServicesWorkspace875940263:
-
The description for Event ID 25 from source MSOLAP$AnalysisServicesWorkspace875940263 cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer.
If the event originated on another computer, the display information had to be saved with the event.
The following information was included with the event:
msmdsrvi.rll
2057
And finally from .NET Runtime
-
Application: CefSharp.BrowserSubprocess.exe
Framework Version: v4.0.30319
Description: The process was terminated due to an unhandled exception.
Exception Info: System.NullReferenceException
at <Module>.CefSharp.CefAppUnmanagedWrapper.OnRenderThreadCreated(CefSharp.CefAppUnmanagedWrapper*, CefRefPtr<CefListValue>*)
at <Module>.CefExecuteProcess(CefMainArgs*, CefRefPtr<CefApp>*, Void*)
at CefSharp.CefAppWrapper.Run()
at CefSharp.BrowserSubprocess.Program.Main(System.String[])
Let me know if you want any more detail on any of these, or anything else I can provide.
Richard
Hi rhurford,
Perflib and PerfNet are related with system performance counter. We could use the following command to rebuild the performance counter under CMD with admin rights (Reference):
lodctr /R
The other two errors are related with Microsoft SQL server Analyze service, which is not in a clean shutdown status. A thread for reference.
And reviewing your previous post, the system has been updated, which I suspect should be the cause of this.
If you would like to take a detailed checkup of the update, then please find the following logs:
- Windows update log (Reference)
- System CBS log, located in C:\Windows\Logs\CBS.
Then check the errors through the logs.
Suggested troubleshooting method should be the following (we may directly go with those steps without checking the logs):
- If you have any system backup, then use it to restore back the health status, and do the update again;
- If there is no backup available, open CMD with admin rights, run the following command: Dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
- After doing step 2, check your Microsoft SQL server status, if still in trouble, try to perform a repair. (Reference)
- If there is still performance counter errors, run the lodctr /R command after step 3.
See if the above would helps.

I have wrangled with this issue of BI not loading for weeks! Thanks for suggesting the 32 bit version. It gets me up and going. Hate the thoughts of a reinstall.
