Power BI desktop - 'OK' button not working for Python configuration

Issue: Python Configuration – "OK" Button Not Working in Power BI Desktop

Description:

I’m trying to configure Python scripting in Power BI Desktop (latest version) via

File → Options and settings → Options → Python scripting

I provide the correct path to my Python installation

However, after selecting this directory and clicking "OK", nothing happens — the dialog doesn’t close, and the settings don’t save. There’s no error message or crash, it simply doesn’t respond.

What I’ve Tried:

  • Running Power BI Desktop as Administrator

  • Verifying the path points to the folder (not the python.exe file)

  • Reinstalling Python (version 3.10.11 from python.org)

  • Ensuring all Python dependencies like pandas and matplotlib are installed

  • Resetting Power BI settings by deleting: %LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\Power BI Desktop\User.zip

Note: I have reinstalled my Python and Power BI Desktop. Not only python scripting even I change any of the options like enabling the maps and try clicking 'OK' it is not responding like the same window will be visible.

Hi @Magneto ,

This is usually caused by a UI or registry issue. Try these:

  1. Delete user cache
    %APPDATA%\Microsoft\Power BI Desktop Store App

  2. Switch to MSI version
Uninstall the Store version and install from here

  3. Check display scaling
Set to 100% (not 125% or 150%) and restart Power BI

  4. Rename registry key
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Microsoft Power BI Desktop
    (This resets all settings)

Let me know if it works.

If my response resolved your query, kindly mark it as the Accepted Solution to assist others. Additionally, I’d be grateful for a Kudos if you found it helpful.

Hi @Magneto

It doesn’t sound like the problem is with Python itself. If the 'OK' button doesn’t respond at all in the Options window – not just for Python scripting but for other settings too – the issue is probably with Power BI Desktop or your local profile.

Here’s what I’d try in this case:

  1. Close Power BI completely. Make sure no background process like PBIDesktop.exe or Mashup Evaluation Container is still running in Task Manager.

  2. Delete or rename these folders (after backing them up if needed):

  • %LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\Power BI Desktop\

  • %APPDATA%\Microsoft\Power BI Desktop\

  1. Make sure you don’t have both the Store version and the Installer version of Power BI installed. If you do – uninstall both and reinstall only the installer version from the official website.

  2. Try disabling your antivirus temporarily or checking if Windows Defender is blocking anything.

  3. Check that your user has full write permissions to the AppData folders.

  4. Try running Power BI with reset settings by launching it like this:
    "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Power BI Desktop\bin\PBIDesktop.exe" -resetUserSettings

  5. If none of that works, test on a different Windows user profile or another machine. If it works there, your profile is probably corrupted.

If you’ve done all of this and the problem still happens, I’d open a support ticket with Microsoft and include all the steps you’ve already tried:
