Power BI URL Filter Not Applied in PowerPoint Live Embedding

Hi everyone,

I've been working with Power BI's URL filtering functionality, and I understand how to construct filtered URLs for reports. For example, using URLs like this:

https://app.powerbi.com/groups/{group-id}/reports/{report-id}/ReportSection?filter=Table/Column eq 'Value'

These filtered URLs work perfectly when accessed directly via a browser, showing the report with all the filters applied.

However, when I embed this URL into PowerPoint as a live Power BI object (via Insert > Power BI), the embedded report shows the correct report page but does not apply the filters specified in the URL. It seems to ignore the filter parameter entirely and displays the report in its default state.

What I need: I want to leverage the filtered URL functionality to embed live, filtered reports into PowerPoint. Is there a way to ensure that the filters in the URL are respected when embedding? Or is this a limitation of PowerPoint's live embedding feature?

I am looking for this solution because I need to automate the creation of multiple PowerPoint documents using a macro VBA. Each PowerPoint would embed a filtered URL of the report, creating personalized presentations for different audiences (same report pages, different filters).

Thanks in advance for your help.
Gianluca

Thank you for your help. Much appreciated.

I’d like to clarify my goal to ensure I explain it properly.

I created a PowerPoint layout that integrates to live Power BI report. From this layout, I aim to automatically generate multiple PowerPoint files, each based on the same layout but with different filters applied to the reports.

  1. Each PowerPoint contains multiple pages, with each page corresponding to a page in the Power BI report.
  2. For each PowerPoint document to be generated, I need to apply the same filter across all pages of the report within that document.
  3. The goal is to automate the creation of these filtered PowerPoint documents, starting from a single layout and dynamically applying different filters for each file.

I hope this explanation makes sense: essentially, I am looking for a way to automate the generation of PowerPoint files with live embedded Power BI reports, ensuring that a specific filter is consistently applied across all pages of the report in each generated document.

Thank you again for your support! Any guidance or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi @v-xingshen-msft , do you have any idea on how I could solve this? thanks a lot again

Hi @gcasnici ,
I apologize for responding to your question so late, after our continuous testing and reviewing the documentation, unfortunately, when we add a filter to the url, it is not visible in powerpoint, which is kind of a limitation of powerpoint, and we tried to find another alternative for you.
The filter will be added to the report in the form of silcer as shown below:

After filtering, and then exported to PowerPoint you can realize the normal filtering:

We hope this helps you to solve your current dilemma!

Hope it helps!
