Power BI SQL Server on-premises data Gateway connection won't work

Hi Guys,

I am not sure if I am understanding the capabilities of Power BI and SQL server correctly. I do want to achieve the following scenario:

Create Power BI Dashboards from SQL Server through the on-premises gateway.

The SQL Server is located within a network I don't have direct access to. I installed the on-premises gateway on this server. And according to the "Manage Gateway" settings in Power BI Service it is up and running:

This gateway has also other connections (File System) that already work within a Power Automate Flow. So the connection between this specific Server and o365 is established.

However, I am not able to connect to the SQL Server through Power PI Service or Power BI Desktop.

So my question is:

Should it be possible to connect to the SQL Server via the on-premises Gateway by Power BI Desktop from local PC, which is not in the same network as the SQL Server?

Thank you very much for your help.

Cheers,

Arne

@arne_christmann , is the machine having gateway able to access the SQL server and Gateway has same user credential as the one you have used to publish the file.

In this video after this time, I have Shown SQL Server Gateway config - https://youtu.be/cf-YNWX8Qow?t=3423

Hi @amitchandak ,

Thank you very much for your reply. At the moment I did not publish a file. I just try to connect to the SQL Server via Power BI Desktop from my local machine. I though, I could use the on-permises data gateway to do so. According to Power BI, this gateway is up and running. I can also access Tables via Power Apps, so I assume the connection between o365/on-premises SQL Server is valid:

Unfortunately, I am not able to connect to the SQL Server from my local PC via Power BI Desktop.

My question is: Is Power BI Desktop (or Power BI Service) capable of connecting to remote SQL Server via this on-premises gateway. And if so, how can I achieve this connection..

Thanks in advance,

Arne

I am still not able to establish a direct connection through Power BI Desktop and the SQL Server via the on-premises Gateway. However, creating a Dataflow with this Gateway through Power BI Service works. I can use it then in Power BI Desktop to publish a report. At the same time, a data-source is created, so I can work with that in Power BI Service.

This feels a bit "glitchy" to me.
