Power BI Report Builder creating duplicate files
- 9 months ago
Hi Antipodean_Ian , were these rdl files originally created in SSRS or a older version of Report Builder? In past versions of SSRS, if you created the file in an older version and accesed a newer version of SSRS/Report Builder, a backup file would be generated when the report was opened/upgraded in the newer version. My assumption is a similar behavior may be occuring here.
If this helped, please mark it as the solution so others can benefit too. And if you found it useful, kudos are always appreciated.
Thanks,Samson

Hi Antipodean_Ian ,
Thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Fabric Community.
Thank you SamsonTruong amanrai_01 for the prompt response.
The duplicate "Backup", "Backup 1", "Backup 2"… files are created because the RDLs were built in an older SSRS/Report Builder version. When Power BI Report Builder opens them, it upgrades the file and creates a backup each time.
You can try to fix it by following below:
Open the RDL --> File --> Save (overwrite the file once).
After it is saved in the current schema, Report Builder will stop generating new backup copies when you reopen it.If the files are read-only or stored in a location you can’t modify, copy them to a writable folder, save them once to upgrade, then move them back.
Thank you, Samson. I believe what you said to be the case. (I am new here)
Is there a way to stop it? It is creating multiple backups, 1, 2 , 3... each time I open the file.
Hi Antipodean_Ian , v-venuppu mentioned a good callout here in that once it is saved in the new version, backups will no longer be created.
