Power BI Product question

Hi All,

I am new to PowerBI. I am currently using Power BI Desktop to explore the capabilities of Power BI.

Now I have an sample report created from couple of flat files. How can I share with other users to view the report that I created?

Does others have to have Power PI desktop installed?

Or is there any Power BI server that I can install and configure where I can deploy the Power BI reports and users can consume via web browser with appropriate permissions?

If you can provide me with some insights that would be very much helpful!!

Thanks,

John

Hi @Anonymous

You need to have a Power BI Pro license and the users you want to share the report with also need this license. You will publish the report to a workspace and give other users access to the workspace to be able to view the report.

https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/collaborate-share/service-share-dashboards

  • You need a Power BI Pro or Premium Per User (PPU) license, whether you share content inside or outside your organization.
  • Your recipients also need Power BI Pro or Premium Per User (PPU) licenses, unless the content is in a Premium capacity.
  • If you want to allow recipients to edit a shared report, you have to assign the user a workspace role that allows editing. To learn more about role-level permissions and how to assign roles, read Roles in workspaces.

@Anonymous generally to share reports with other users you have use Power BI service.

You can share pbix file with other users...if they can acesss the source files. (they might need to change certain data source settings)

Also, if the source files is in your local machine other users will not be able to view them in your pbix file.

@Anonymous You might have better luck posting report server questions to the report server forum:

Thank you both for the response and it is really helpful.

I have installed the trial version of PowerBI Report server and Power BI desktop.

Now I have the PowerBI url like this http://server/BI

Now everyone has access to this URL. How can I restrict anonymous access to this url?

Thanks,

John
