Power BI Pro features

I've justed been assigned to Power BI Pro (which I've verified on app.powerbi.com). It doesn't seem to be a specific version of Power BI Desktop for Pro. Correct? I'm missing possibility to publish report to web and also functionality to order contents of reports. Both I've senne demonstrated on youtube. I'm sure there is more. Can anyone help?

JohnnyGunn app.powerbi.com is known as the "Power BI Service" - This is considered an Azure Service.

The Desktop is a download that you can access from app.powerbi.com

Look in the upper right hand side of the Power BI Header and you will see a down arrow with line for "downloads" - click that and you can download the latest "Power BI Desktop". This downloads and installs on your local computer. There are updates monthly, so you will have to manually update it if you want the latest features.

The Desktop (download) allows you to do your ETL, build models and reports. Then you can "Publish" to app.powerbi.com (Service) and build dashboards to share with other users.

  • Hi JohnnyGunn,

Maybe the following webpage would make the difference between Power BI free and Power BI Pro more clear:

Use Power BI for free or buy Power BI Pro

Eno1978 explains about the difference between Power BI Service and Power BI Desktop. If you would like to check the details, then please refer to the following official documents:

For Power BI Service: Power BI Documentation

For Power BI Desktop: Get Power BI Desktop

And the FAQs: Frequently asked questions about Power BI

If any further questions when using Power BI, please feel free to post back.

    Regards

JohnnyGunn The Power BI Desktop is the same for everyone and is a Free offering.

The "Publish to Web" feature in the Power BI Service should be available, unless your admin has disabled the feature via the Admin Portal in Power BI. There are also some features and connection types that will not work with Publish to Web.

Something to keep in mind also, which may be causing confusion.

The Desktop is for modeling and report building

The Service is for report building and Sharing (Dashboards)

The features you see in the Service will only match the Desktop in the report building part. The non-shared components will be different completely.

Thanks for your answer. Power BI Service is not a program, is it? I don't find anything to download. Maybe it is the whole package? I've got a feeling this is a stupid question :-)
