If you want to achieve this you follow below steps.
There is option in Matrix chart formatting settings..Row-subtotals..In that you have backgorund color option, then turn on Apply to lables option. Pls refere to the below image,

Thank you! Spent hours to format, and apparently, I was not able to spot "Apply to Labels"
