Power BI Maps county border

Hello

I am creating a map in Power BI and I am using the Lat/Long to identify differnt coutneis within a state. Is there a way to give each county in the map a border? I would just like a black border around each county and the county name to show on the area as well. Im not showing that as an option.

Hi @Malcolmw ,

The method DataNinja777 provided should be helpful. You can try using shape map or ArcGIS.

What’s more, power bi currently only shows the state borders, the country borders cannot be shown.

You can view the following documents to learn more information.

Hi @Malcolmw,

In Power BI, adding borders and labels to counties requires creative solutions since built-in visuals don’t directly support these features. The Shape Map visual is ideal for this, allowing you to upload custom TopoJSON files with county boundaries. You can source these files from platforms like MapShaper or GIS databases. While Shape Map doesn’t natively display county names, tooltips or text boxes can help.

For simpler maps, the Filled Map visual can highlight counties but lacks direct border support, relying on transparency adjustments to make boundaries distinct. For advanced needs, ArcGIS Maps in Power BI offers built-in options for borders and labels, though some features may require a license.

Alternatively, tools like QGIS or ArcGIS can create custom maps with county boundaries and labels, saved as transparent images to use as backgrounds in Power BI. Custom visuals like Icon Map from the Power BI Marketplace also provide flexibility.

Best regards,
