Power BI Desktop not loading - splash screen only

Hi,

 

Power BI desktop was running nicely, but it has since stopped. When opening the app, the splash screen shows, and it seems to hang.

 

Context:

Due to the sensitive nature of the data, we have to run Power BI desktop on a server (and connect via Remote Desktop). The Power BI reports are then published from there. Power BI desktop works fine in other environments.

 

Server:

Xeno E7 4850 2GHz

128Gb RAM

Windows Server 2016

SQL Server 2012

I am running with a Pro licence.

 

Steps tried based on various online searches:

  1. I downloaded the latest version of Power BI. 
  2. Uninstalled and reinstalled Power BI.
  3. Update .Net to 6.0.7 (AspNetCore, NetCore, and WindowsDesktop)
  4. Updated Microsoft Edge Webview.
  5. Enabled SSAS;

 

Any ideas? How can I check the startup log to see what is causing the problem?

    Hi Anonymous ,

     

    Do you have an On-premises data gateway installed on your server? Because gateways can sometimes affect the startup of power bi desktop.

    In this document there is a check for situations where power bi desktop does not open, you can refer to it for help.

    Also, I noticed that you have the latest version installed, I wonder if you have tried to use an older version? Does it work fine?

    Unfortunately, using an older version of Power BI does not seem to fix the problem. I've tried the June 2022 and May 2022 versions, and still getting the splash screen.

    When I run Process Monitor, PBIDesktop.exe has "Thread Create", and a second later "Thread Exit". A second later the operations repeat (creating and exiting a thread). Its clearly hanging or looking fro something, I just don't know what.

      Hi Anonymous ，

       

      Do you have anti-virus software or a firewall on your computer? If so, you can close it and try opening desktop or running desktop as administrator. if you have a gateway on your computer, make sure it is also up to date.
