Power BI Desktop crashes at launch
When I launch Power BI Desktop the loading screen flashes up for one second and then just closes down.
When I have Task Manager open, you can see the app launch for a second and then just stops.
I'm on my work laptop and don't have admin rights. Asked my IT department, but they've not had any luck either.
Installed from our company portal, as well as the .exe from the website. 32-bit and 64-bit... tried everything on forums, ChatGPT, etc. Cannot seem to solve the issue.

No, don't have any other versions available.

Hi svdheever
Could you please try below steps (no admin needed):
-
Install the Microsoft Store version of Power BI Desktop.
-
Launch without GPU: press Windows + R, type PBIDesktop.exe -disablegpu and press Enter. If it works, later set Power BI Desktop to “Power saving” in Windows Settings > System > Display > Graphics.
-
Clear caches (close Power BI first):
%LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\Power BI Desktop\AnalysisServicesWorkspaces
%LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\Power BI Desktop\TempSMDatasets
%LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\Power BI Desktop\DataCache -
Reset user settings: rename this folder to User_old and try again:
%LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\Power BI Desktop\User -
Unplug external monitors and disconnect VPN, then launch Power BI.
-
If it still crashes, ask IT to whitelist PBIDesktop.exe, msmdsrv.exe, and PowerBIRunner.exe, and check the crash log in Event Viewer > Windows Logs > Application.

1. Our IT team blocks access to the Microsoft Store.
2. Get an error saying Windows cannot find 'PBIDesktop.exe'... it is definitely there when I look under C:\Program Files\Microsoft Power BI Desktop\bin
3. I've never managed to even open Power BI Desktop
