Power BI Desktop: Continuous Sign-In Pop-Up and Unauthorized Error

Power BI Desktop requires sign-in for many online features, and recent updates (2024+) have tightened the Microsoft account integration and licensing rules:

Personal Microsoft accounts (like @gmail.com or @outlook.com) are not fully supported for Power BI Service.

When you do not have a work or school account, Power BI Desktop may continuously prompt for sign-in, especially if: You are not licensed correctly. The Microsoft sign-in system is not detecting a valid Power BI license. There's a network restriction (e.g., firewalls, proxies). Or the version of Power BI you're using requires organization-linked credentials.

Step 1: Download the Microsoft Store Version (Important): If you installed Power BI Desktop via the .msi installer, switch to the Microsoft Store version, which is better for license/token management. Uninstall Power BI Desktop (if installed via direct download). Open Microsoft Store. Search for Power BI Desktop.Install it from the Store. Use a Free Microsoft Work Account via Microsoft 365 Developer Program: Since OP does not have an organization email, they can sign up for the Microsoft 365 Developer Program to get a free organizational account with full Power BI capabilities. Go to: https://developer.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/dev-program. Sign in with a personal Microsoft account. Join the program. Choose the option: “Set up an instant sandbox”. This gives you these options. A free tenant for 90 days (auto-renewable). A work email like [email protected]. Access to Power BI Service, SharePoint, Teams, etc. Use this onmicrosoft.com email to sign in to Power BI Desktop.

Sign In Cleanly in Power BI Desktop: Once you have the Developer account:

1. Open Power BI Desktop (from the Store).
2. Sign in using your new organizational email (@yourtenant.onmicrosoft.com).
3. Let it fully sign in wait until the icon in the top-right shows your name.
