Power BI Chart Behavior – Legend Selection Highlights Instead of Filtering (Stacked Column chart)
I’m reaching out regarding a behavior I’ve observed in Power BI visuals, specifically in both Stacked Column Charts and Clustered Bar Charts, where selecting a legend item results in highlighting rather than filtering, which is impacting user clarity and reporting logic.
Scenario:
I’m using both Stacked Column Charts and Clustered Bar Charts with Legends enabled.
When I click on a specific legend item (e.g., "12"), the chart highlights only the relevant portions, while other legend values remain partially visible (dimmed), rather than being filtered out.
If I then apply a Time Slicer (e.g., for a month where "12" has no data), the chart still retains the structure of other values (dimmed), even though I want the visual to show no bars at all, triggering a separate Card Visual to display "No Data Available."
Due to the highlight behavior instead of filtering, the card visual does not align well with what the user sees in the chart, causing confusion—especially when there truly is no data for that combination.
Request:
Is there an option to force legend selection to filter the visual (removing unrelated legend values), rather than simply highlighting them?
If this behavior is by design, could this be considered as a feature enhancement request to allow full filtering on legend selection in bar/column visuals?
Any suggestions or best practices to achieve this behavior using alternative methods would be appreciated.
I’ve attached a short video that demonstrates this issue for clarity. - Awesome Screenshot -- Screen recorder and Screen capture

Hi Nishanth52 ,
Thank you for reaching out to the Microsoft Fabric Community. As mentioned MattiaFratello ,Power BI treats legend clicks as highlight actions by design, which cannot be changed to full filtering. While slicers, field parameters, and DAX measures provide good workarounds, it's still a known limitation.

Hi Nishanth52,
Power BI treats legend selections as "highlight" interactions by default, which keeps the full context of the data visible, rather than fully filtering out unselected categories. This approach is intended to provide a more comprehensive view, but it can be confusing in cases like yours, where a complete filter would be clearer.
Potential Workarounds
Switch to a Slicer for Legend Filtering:
Instead of relying on legend interactions, consider adding a slicer for the same category (e.g., "12"). This will apply a true filter to the data, removing unrelated values entirely, aligning the chart and card visuals.Use Field Parameters (Dynamic Legend):
If your legend items are dynamic or you want more control, consider using field parameters to manage the legend filtering explicitly.Measure-Driven Approach:
Use a measure that accounts for the selected legend and dynamically adjusts the data displayed. For example, you can create a measure that only returns data for the selected legend value, ensuring that unrelated items are excluded.
