PBI desktop update strategy

Hi All,

Hope all is well!!!

I need an expert suggestion from you. I underdtand that PBI is having a new version in every month andonly the latest version is supported). Then, what is the best practice to update our desktop? Updating every month is tedious and admins are not friendly to it. Also, do we need to test older reports after upgrading to a new version (in that case this will cost pretty job)?

    This is how we do things for our company, and it may not be Microsoft's perfered method...

     

    If you are publishing your reports to the web, the desktop updates will have little impact on your end users.  In this situation, it won't be critical for your developers (using desktop) to stay on a simular version together, especially if there's only a few of them.

     

    If you have a large number of users building reports, or using the desktop app instead of web updates, consider PowerBI just like any other software control version you have in the company. 

    • We tell all our desktop users to only intall updates approved by the IT admin, and IT downloads and stores the latest approved installer on our network drive for internal use.
    • We only update PowerBI Desktop when a feature or enhancement is needed to keep everyone on the same version as long as possible.
    • Yes, our team does re-check key reports when we want to move a new version, and confirms nothing breaks before IT approves the new updates and moved the .exe installer to the network drive.
