PBI Desktop - How to set Sort when using a dataset from PBI Service?

This is a PBI Desktop sorting issue specific to a dataset that is using the Live Connection method to the PBI Service.  When using a local file I don't have any problems but this one came up when I moved the data to OneDrive and then connected to it directly from the PBI Service.  I did that so that the reports/dashboard will be auto updated.

Issue:

  • Dataset originates from an Excel XLSX file stored on OneDrive for Business.
  • PBI Service connects to ODforB to get data
  • PBI Desktop connects to the dataset on the PBI Service
  • Within PBI Desktop I've created a Cluster Column Chart with names going across the X axis.
  • There is an additional field within the dataset called "sort" which includes integers so that I can control the sorting.
  • When using a Live Connection the Sort by Column option in the ribbon is disabled so I'm not able to chooose my "sort" column as a way to control the sort or of the X axis.
    • Note - this is not an issue when the dataset is coming from a local file because you can use the Sort by Column option.

How do I control the sorting?

Hi @s7powerbi,

When using the Power BI service live connection, there are a few limitations and considerations to keep in mind. Since this is a live connection, left-navigation and modeling are disabled, similar to the behavior when connected to SQL Server Analysis Services. So the Sort by Column option is disabled. For more details, you can refer to this article. Smiley Happy
