Hi All,
I was asked to create a PowerBI report that shows numbers of occurences for a category per month and totals for that month as well (see visualisation below)
As this required the categories to have a specific colour and be ordered in a certain way the whole thing became a lot more complicated than I had hoped, but the end result was exactly what the user wanted....untill.
A new request has come in and now they would like to see targets overlaid for monthly totals (see below for mock up)
Is something that looks like this at all possible?
I can send the PBIX if required but the data is derived from a query to a database.
Thank you
Jack

Hi @jacobvz ,
"issue is not so much an error message but when I copy the link to the workbook and want to use it in a report by using the link to the excel file it shows me a blank screen"
You cannot use the web link which directs to the excel file in power service to connect it in power bi desktop. As you mentioned, store it in the cloud source and configure gateway for it is optional and available.
"I tried converting the excel to a powerbi dataset but when I try to use it in the report I get the message that the report is already using another dataset (which is correct, I do)"
To connect to power bi datasets in power bi desktop, the connection mode is Live Connection which only allows just one data source to connect in power bi.

Hi
I have taken your advise and created this. Thank you
Sofar the request was monthly onlyso I think we are good on that..I can make the line same as background colour and just leave the marker. Can we customize the marker?
Finaly we like to give the user access to modify the targets so I used an excel spreadsheet as the datasource. but when I upload this to app.powerbi.com i seem to have issues connecting to the excel file.
when I change the datasource in the report from local file to the saved link for the file online I get message that it is receiving html.
issue is not so much an error message but when I copy the link to the workbook and want to use it in a report by using the link to the excel file it shows me a blank screen
I just wanted people to be able to modify this file in the cloud , refresh the report based on the new data and be done with it...
As a sub optimal workaround I have created a network share and defined that in the gateway to get to the file but that means people need to be on the network to be able to edit the file.
I tried converting the excel to a powerbi dataset but when I try to use it in the report I get the message that the report is already using another dataset (which is correct, I do)

Hi @jacobvz ,
You can select different markers in the Shape tab when you enable 'Show markers' in the chart:
When you upload to power bi service, you have faced with issues. Did it have any error messages and could you please consider sharing the error message or screenshots about it for further discussion?

I replied to the wrong post..I responded to your post above your post 🙂
@jacobvz , you can have monthly target line (but not by category) , You can have measure on secondary axis.
You can choose stepped dotted like or line with market and same color as background color.
