Optimizing Power BI Report Management: Version Tracking and Dynamic Deployment

Hello Power BI Community,

I'm here with a question seeking the best practices used by the Power BI community, which I might not be aware of.

We have a single structured database for all clients, but each client's data is stored in a separate database. I've designed a master report connected to the dataset through parameters. For each client, I deployed the same master file and connected it to their respective database using parameters for the database connection.

For example, the master report I've designed is named:

Master Report - Combine

I've deployed this master report for:

  • Client A: Connected with A database using parameters
  • Client B: Connected with B database using parameters
  • Client C: Connected with C database using parameters

Now, Client C has reported an issue in their report. I fixed that issue in the Client C master report and deployed it for Client C. Consequently, the Client C master report is different from those of Client A and Client B.

After making the changes in the Client C report, I updated my Master Report - Combine file. Subsequently, a new client, Client D, enrolled, and I deployed the latest Master Report - Combine for Client D.

Current state:

  • Clients A & B are on the previous version.
  • Clients C & D are on the latest version of the master report.

Q1: How should I track the versioning of "Master Report - Combine" to know which version is deployed for each client, and how can I keep everything on track?

Q2: If an issue is identified in "Master Report - Combine" that needs to be fixed for all clients, is there any dynamic way of deploying the latest version to all clients? Manually doing this for each client is time-consuming, especially with 50+ clients.

I'm seeking suggestions, advice, or insights based on your experience in dealing with these issues.

Hi @Baqa,

I'd like to suggest you create a report to getting data from these data sources and publish to power bi service side, then you can connect and getting data from the published semantic model to design reports.

Connect to semantic models in the Power BI service from Power BI Desktop - Power BI | Microsoft Lear...

After these steps, you only need to update and modified on the published source report and it should not affect the 'designed' report usages.
