If you're looking for the same period in the previous year (whether it's year, month, etc), use SAMEPERIODLASTYEAR, like this:
Sales Difference =
[Sales Amount Total]
-
CALCULATE([Sales Amount Total], SAMEPERIODLASTYEAR('Date'[Date]))
The output looks like this:
