Hi energysupport ,
It sounds like there may be an issue with the specific template file that you are trying to open.
One possibility is that the file may have become corrupted or damaged in some way.
Another possibility is that there may be a compatibility issue between the template file and the version of Power BI Desktop that you are using.
Here are a few things you can try:
- Try opening the template file on a different computer or with a different version of Power BI Desktop to see if the issue persists.
- Try creating a new template file with the same parameters and see if that file works properly.
- Check to make sure that all of the required data sources and connections are set up correctly in the template file.
- Try repairing or reinstalling Power BI Desktop to see if that resolves the issue.

I had a similar sounding issue. I noticed our pbit files were no longer opening, it would take a long time to even get to the parameters window and then would eventually run out of memory (before ever really loading).I tried everything to fix this over the course of a couple of days. I eventually discovered saving a previously working pbit file resulted in the same error so thought it had to be something wrong with the desktop version. The issue seemed to fall in line with when we started using June 2023 desktop version. I have just upgraded to July 2023 and suddenly all the pbit files are working as expected again.
I was able to find very little information on the issue experienced but think it might be something to do with WebView2 and can see an update for that was part of the July 2023 desktop release.
Not sure if this is your issue but maybe try upgrading to July 2023. Hope you get to the bottom of it. It was really frustrating!
