Object Level Security Not Supported

Hi all,

in general it is possible to create a Object-Level Security (OLS) in my Power BI Report using Tabular Editor. I am using Tabular Editor 2. To setup OLS it is neccesary to activate the unsopported features in Tabular Editor 2 (see Screenshot below).

Does anyone have made bad experience with OLS or is it reliable?

Best Regards!

  • Hi Flo1,

as of my knowledge you dont need this option. At least in my cases I never actively used this.
Check out the example here. And I also just use Tabular Editor 2 for it.

Another option could be to use the new feature in MS Fabric Security with OLS, check it out here.

    Best regards!

Hi Mauro89 thank you, you're right.
I also figured out with the current version of Tabular Editor (2.27.2) it is no longer necessary to activate the unsopported features. With my older version of Tabular Editor (I think it was version 2.25.X) there was an other behaviour.

      Best Regards!

  • Hi Flo1 ,

Yes, it is technically possible to define Object-Level Security (OLS) in a Power BI dataset using Tabular Editor 2 but only under certain conditions.

Tabular Editor 2 does not officially support all model metadata operations required for OLS.
Therefore, you must enable: File >> Preferences >> Enable unsupported features. This exposes the OLS properties so you can set them manually.

If unsupported features are enabled, you can:

    • Add a Role
    • Set Table Permissions = None / Read / ReadObject
    • Set Column Permissions (hide / expose)
    • Create OLS definitions in the model metadata

If done correctly, Power BI Desktop and the Power BI Service will honor your OLS rules.

    Thanks,
