ODBC Error When Connecting to BigQuery

Hi!

Out of nowhere, I recieved this error message when trying to refresh the data. I have already installed the Simba ODBC driver, so I have no clue in the world what is going on with this. Any help is extremely appreciated!

ODBC: ERROR [HY000] [Microsoft][DSI] An error occurred while attempting to retrieve the error message for key 'DSSslErrorMessage' with message parameters ['unable to get local issuer certificate'] and component ID 110: Message not found in file "C:\Program Files\WindowsApps\Microsoft.MicrosoftPowerBIDesktop_2.132.1053.0_x64__8wekyb3d8bbwe\bin\ODBC Drivers\Simba Google BigQuery ODBC Driver\en-US\DSMessages.xml"

EDIT: Having had the same issue, I worked with IT and I have identified that our CloudFlare firewall is the culprit! I'll leave the message below in case that doesn't fix it for you, but do attempt the connection with the firewall paused.

We have resolved the issue by adding 'googleapis.com' to the Do Not Inspect rule on our CloudFlare instance. This now connects without problem.

I am almost relieved to see this post - as I've suddenly started having the same issue in the last week, along with two of my colleagues. The error of interest here is the 'unable to get local issuer certificate' part - the latter is purely the fact that the Simba driver is lacking an error message to show for this properly....

I've been tearing my non-existing hair out last Thursday and this morning trying to get to the bottom of this - the main problem appears to be this:

(1120) SSL verification failed because the server host name specified for the connection does not match the "CN" entry in the "Subject" field or any of the "DNS Name" entries of the "Subject Alternative Name" field in the server certificate

which appears when I attempt to connect to either user or service account authentication in the ODBC Data Sources Administrator (a program I never wish to see again after this gets resolved!) - every time I attempt to connect, it provides this error... regardless of the DSN type I try.

I believe this is the same underlying issue as the error you've seen there too - which also is returned when attempting to authenticate with Google.

The errors aren't hugely helpful as I've no idea how to actually change the offending lines anywhere - chatGPT has been great at providing solutions that ask me to check or change things in the admin panel that aren't even present (e.g. hostname) - and I've done a lot of certificate downloading and other tinkering to no avail.

So I may not have the answer for you yet (though I'm going to test with IT whether the firewall is an issue - out of interest are you using Cloudflare?) - but I can at least tell you the various things I've attempted!

Hopefully someone in the know can help us both, as right now it's a HUGE blocker to my work!

@SillySuzy

It seems like a certificate error. Is this the first time you are trying to connect to BigQuery?

check the connectivity, run the telnet, ping and tracert command and see if you find any issues.

Please check whether you have installed all the necessary certificates required to establish the connection
