'New Quick Measure' option disappears each time I use it once

Hi there,

New to Power BI. Using latest version of Desktop on Windows 11.

Each session in Power BI Desktop, the first time I right click a dimension I can see the 'new quick measure' option. However, once I've used it once, it disappears and I have to restart Power BI to see it again. I've read a few tutorials about enabling it in the preview features, but I don't even see it as an option in preview features.

Very frustrating for my workflow, so any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Hi @MHaggquist

If you're referring to Quick Measures, these are not part of the Preview Features unless you're using them together with Copilot, in which case you should enable everything related to Copilot under Options > Preview Features.

However, if you're referring to Visual Calculations (the new feature for visuals), then yes – those do require enabling in Preview Features.

Now, based on how you described the issue – it's possible you got confused by how the Quick Measure UI behaves after first use:
When you create your first Quick Measure via right-click on a field, it opens the dedicated Quick Measure pane as a tab in the Data or Model view. From that point on, you no longer need to right-click a field – you can just use the existing tab to add more quick measures.

That’s why the right-click option disappears – it’s not a bug, just a shift to using the dedicated UI.

I’ve tested this on the latest version of Power BI Desktop and it’s working as expected.

If it still doesn’t work for you even after checking that, try doing a clean reinstall of Power BI Desktop.
And if the problem persists, I recommend opening a support ticket with Microsoft so they can investigate further.

Ah okay, thank you! I'm working on a small screen so closed the Quick Measure pane when I wasn't using it but now see that there's a tab for it on the far right bar. Thanks!

Hi  @MHaggquist  ,
Thanks for reaching out to the Microsoft fabric community forum.

I would also take a moment to thank @Ritaf1983   , for actively participating in the community forum and for the solutions you’ve been sharing in the community forum. Your contributions make a real difference.

The behavior you're seeing is normal in Power BI Desktop. When you first use Quick Measure by right-clicking a field, it opens the Quick Measure pane (usually in the Data or Model view). After that, the right-click option is hidden, as Power BI expects you to use the open pane to create more quick measures.

This is by design and not a bug. Instead of restarting Power BI, you can simply switch to the existing Quick Measure tab and continue from there.

If for some reason the pane isn’t visible or Power BI doesn’t behave as expected, you can try:

  • Make sure the Quick Measure pane is open.

  • Restarting Power BI Desktop

If I misunderstand your needs or you still have problems on it, please feel free to let us know.

    Best Regards,
    Menaka.
