New List Slicer lacks basic functionality the existing "old" slicer has?

Thanks for raising this. You're correct that the new List Slicer currently does not support dropdown formatting or custom expand/collapse icons like the classic slicer. This is expected behavior, as the new visual is specifically designed as a "List" slicer and does not include dropdown functionality by design.

That said, the new List Slicer introduces several enhancements over the traditional slicer. These include the ability to restrict selection to only the last level (leaf nodes) in a hierarchy, which can help limit user selection to the most granular level. It also adds new formatting options like Label and Image, allowing for more visual customization. You can now format each field in a hierarchy separately using the Series dropdown, and an Advanced toggle has been added to fine-tune Selection, Expansion, and Interaction states.

As of now, there hasn’t been any official announcement about merging the new and traditional slicers. However, since updates are being rolled out in stages and more features are being added to the new slicer types, it's possible we’ll see additional improvements over time.
