Need to change table using parameter in Power BI Service

Here my requirement is to replace/change table using parameter. Actually this is working fine in Power BI desktop but when changing parameter in Power BI service, It's not working.

I have created 2 parameters i.e. TableName and SchemaName. Below is the screenshot of parameters-

And I have used these parameters in Advance editor of the existing table as shown in below screenshot:

From Above screenshot: #"SchemaName" is showing parameter for schema and #"TableName" is showing parameter for table.

When we are changing TableName parameter in Power BI desktop, It works fine and columns of Test_Sample gets replaced by new table.

But when we are changing parameter in Power BI service then table doesn't get changed.

can you please help?

Hi @pinkukumar ,

Please refer to the description on the official website.

As a report creator, you define parameters in Power BI Desktop. When you publish that report to the Power BI service, the parameter settings and selections travel with it. You can review and edit parameter settings in the Power BI service, but not create them.

  1. In the Power BI service, select the cog icon to open Settings.
  2. Select the tab for Datasets and highlight a dataset in the list.
  3. Expand Parameters. If the selected dataset has no parameters, you see a message with a link to Learn more about query parameters. If the dataset does have parameters, expand the Parameters heading to reveal those parameters.
  4. Review the parameter settings and make changes if needed.

Grayed-out fields aren't editable. "Any" or "Binary" type parameters work in Power BI Desktop, but we currently don't support them in the service, for security reasons.

I have also found a similar post, please refer to it to see if it helps you.

Parameter take effect on query but won't change its own display

  • Refresh visuals in the report by Refresh in the Home ribbon

If it does not help, please provide a screenshot with the error.

Quick question, is it possible to let the end/business user change this parameter? I mean, to follow settings -> Datasets -> parameters... you need to have an admin or member role, is there any way to let the "viewer" role to play with that parameter?

I have a data source of Web type, and it is parameterized, something like: https://domain/{parameter} and wanted to let the user change that parameter from the report in PBI service

Hi @santiago_ortiz , I have exactly the same question. I would like to let end user/business be able to change the parameters values so they can see only the relevant data. Changing the parameters via the settings of the dataset is reserved only to admin or report creator. Did you get an answer ? Thanks in advance.
