You can create another new calculated column as below to format with the expected date format as below and apply this new column on the Play Axis as below screenshot. Please find the details in the attachment.

If I go to column tools, the date format is a Short Date.

You can click the down-pointing arrow in the dropdown list, and choose the proper data type from the list just as below screenshot.
