NEW and Existing Customers

Want to calculate New and Existing Customers based on first activity date of customer. When I select calendar fiscal year and quarter then First Activity date of Customer which lies in that fiscal_year and quarter can show as NEW and before selected period and after selected period it can show me Existing.
