Maps Legend Removes Data Points

Hi, I'm using the Maps visual to display account locations; the pins on the map work correctly when initially added as shown in the first screenshot below.  However, I want to color code those pins based on the branch they are asigned to; when I add the branch information to the Legend field on the visual the color coding takes place but I lose the majority of the pins, shown in the second screenshot.  Any idea why the pins are disappearing, and how can I get this to work without losing them?

    Hi MikeThoreson ,

    Please refer to the steps: 

    • Ensure that every account location that you're trying to display has an associated branch assigned to it. Missing or null values in your branch data could result in pins not being displayed when that field is used for color coding.
    • If the branch field has a high cardinality (i.e., a large number of unique values), Power BI might struggle to display a distinct color for each unique value, leading to pins not being displayed. Consider grouping branch values into broader categories if possible, or using a different field with lower cardinality for color coding.
    • In some cases, adjusting the visual's settings can help. For instance, increasing the size of the pins or changing their shape might make them more visible when color coded. Additionally, ensure that the map's zoom level and focus are set appropriately to display all relevant locations.

     

    If it still does not help, please provide more details.

    • What is the version of Power BI Desktop you are using?
    • Could you please provide some sample data( without privacy information) for testing.

      HI, thanks for getting back to me.  I've double checked the data and verified I don't have any null values in the applicable fields.  I do think the issue is related to your notes on high cardinality;  as you indicated, I used a different field for the legend called "Division" (a higher level rollup of branches) and found the map returns a larger number of pins than when using "Branch".  However, that level doesn't have the granularity that I'm looking for.

      The first tab is the list of accounts and the second tab is the list of branches/divisions; the two tabs are set up as different tables in my model.  On the visual, I'm using "Full Address", categorized as Place and also included longitude and latitude.  The account list is over 5K records; from the research I've done it appears the map visual can only accomdate 3500 records, so I imagine that's causing some of the issue.  That research has also indicated Azure maps can accomodate 30K records so I'm wondering if it would be better to go in that direction.  I tried to use Azure Map visual but it appears I don't have access to it.

       

      My Power BI Desktop version is 2.126.627.0 64-bit (February 2024)
