Greetings all,
I'm unable to produce a simple Map Visual in Power BI. I choose the visual, drag the Country field in my dataset to Location, a summable field to size, and for some reason the visual stays the same; just a world map.
I thought the problem is with my dataset, so I tried with the sample dataset provided by MS, to no avail. I checked the data types as well; Country is set to text and the summable field is set to decimal number (also tried whole number). I also changed the Data Category for Country from Uncategorized to Country, still nothing. Below is a screenshot of the view I'm getting:
I am facing exactly the same problem as Ali_Sh.
Hi @Anonymous ,
Are you saying that the map visual doens't work even with the data provided by MS? For me it seems to work. See below:
See the data category for my country column:
I have following values types in my Country column:
What version of Power BI are you on?
Try deleting the visual and creating again. This should work.
Hello @Pragati11 ,
Thank you for the speedy response. That's indeed what I'm saying. I have the same options in the Data view as you kindly illustrated, yet it's the same. I tried on my personal laptop as well, still nothing. Perhaps it's worth mentioning that I installed Power BI on my work and personal laptops in the past 24 hours.
Here's Power BI's version as well:
Version: 2.102.845.0 64-bit (February 2022)
Hi @Anonymous ,
Can you share some sample data here please that you are trying to use on the map visual?
Also did you try moving anyother fields to the Size section like SALES?
Hello @Pragati11
I tried using other summable fields; unfortunately, it's the same.
I tried with my actual data and other sample datasets, such as the one MS provides in Power BI. Here's the data view in case that helps:
Hi @Anonymous ,
Can you try opening a new Power Bi file and then try creating this map visual?
Is it possible for you to share the pbix file with me by removing any sensitive information from it?
You can share the file by uploading it to dropbox or Wetransfer.
Hello again @Pragati11
I'm sharing with you the pbix file with the MS provided sample dataset. Hope that helps.
HI @Anonymous ,
I just opened your pbix file and can see the map visual with the details for Mexico city.
I didn't change anything, just opened the file and can see the point plotted on your map visual.
Just zoomed in the map and see the point plotted here:
I am not sure why your DATA CATEGORY for Country column is set to County.
When I change the DATA CATEGORY to COUNTRY, the map visual seems to be work. See below:
Can you make sure you are using the right Data Category for your Country column?
Hi @Pragati11
Apologies for that misstep. I was trying other options out of frustration and forgot to put it back to Country. I just did that and I'm still getting nothing. At least now I confirmed that I'm using Power BI correctly, considering you're not facing the same issue.
Cheers.
HI @Anonymous ,
Did you try Zoom-in, Zoom-out to confirm that you are still not getting the countries on the map?
Please share some screenshot on what is Data Category of Country column and what you are geting now? I want to make sure that this is done right .
Also under format settings you have following option right:
HI @Anonymous ,
Can you try setting Data Category --> Uncategorised for the COUNTRY column once and check if it works?
Have you also tried by modifying this Data Category to different values like Place, State or Province, etc.?
Also try clearing cache and then try again creating this map visual:
Hello @Pragati11
Did as you kindly suggested above; still no luck. I tried resetting the Power BI app from the control panel earlier today to no avail.
Hi @Anonymous ,
Did you try clearing the cache?
Also what do you mean by resetting the Power BI app from the control panel ?
If this is really not working then please raise a support ticket on Power BI issues here: https://community.powerbi.com/t5/Issues/idb-p/Issues
I can't help you further as this seems to perfectly work at my end and I have asked you to try all the options I can think of.
The only last thing I can ask you to try is:
Hi @Pragati11
What I meant is that I went to Settings, Apps and Settings, chose Power BI, and hit Reset.
I tried clearing the cache as you suggested, and I also tried restarting my laptop and starting anew; still nothing.
I'm going to raise a support ticket as per your instructions. Hopefully it'll yield fruit. In the meantime, thank you sincerely for the troubles to which you went.
Warmest regards,
Ali
Hi @Anonymous ,
No problem. Happy to help anytime.
Hopefully raising this as an issue solves your problem! If it does don't hesitate to accept this as a solution as this may help othes on the forum as well.
Hi @Pragati11
I thought I'd try my luck with the link you provided first. If it manages to solve my issue, I'll come back here, post the solution, and mark it as such.
