Many to Many Missing in Power BI Desktop Sept 2019

I need to create a Many to Many relationship between 2 tables, but I don't see that option as a choice when manually setting a relationship.  I went to Options and Settings - Options and don't see anywhere that this can be set (I saw a YouTube video that the setting is under "Preview Features" but Power BI desktop doesn't have that setting).

I'm using September 2019 Power BI Desktop - we have an on prem Power BI report server.

Is there any way I can set cardinality as Many to Many?

Thanks!

Hi @PowerBIkalaimo,

Power BI Desktop optimized for Power BI Report Server does not allow for the use of preview features. Besides that, it does not supports many to many relationships yet. Power BI desktop support both of them, you can install Power BI Desktop and Power BI Desktop optimized for Power BI Report Server on the same computer if it is necessary. Here is the documentation for describing the difference between Power BI Desktop optimized for Power BI Report Server and Power BI desktop, you can check it for more details.

Sorry for not being clear in my first post, but yes, we are using the Sept 2019 version optimzed for Report Server.  I don't even see "Preview Features" when I go into Options and Settings.

Hi @PowerBIkalaimo,

Relationships with a many-many cardinality are part of the larger composite models capabilities in Power BI Desktop. You can enable this by navigating to File > Options & settings > Options > Preview Features, and checking off composite models as below screenshot. You’ll need to restart Power BI after enabling composite models. This feature doesn't appear anymore in recent version of Power BI desktop(after May, 2019), but the Many:Many join is still definitely available as a cardinality.

Could you please try to complete the following steps and check if you still can't find the option of “Many to Many” cardinality?

  1. Update the version of Power BI desktop to the latest version
  2. Open the previous PBIX file, delete and re-create the relationship for that 2 tables

Or are you actually using Power BI Desktop optimized for Power BI Report Server instead of Power BI Desktop?
