Guys - I have to create dashboard to display travel and expenses for my organization. The requirement is to have a dashbaord crated for each manager (The format/design will be the same. Only filtered differently for the relevant data). There are about 20 managers in total.
Question is. Is there a way in Power BI, to have a source dashboard (visualization) that i can leverage to replicate updates to the rest of the dashboards? In this way, i will have to only mantian 1 dashbaord and not 20. I will be using the same dataset which will update evrytime there is a change but this wont update the visuals. Any ideas?
Yes, there is a way in Power BI to have a source dashboard that can be leveraged to replicate updates to the rest of the dashboards. One way to accomplish this is by using Power BI's "Duplicate Page" feature.
Here's how you can use this feature to replicate updates across multiple dashboards:
Create a source dashboard that includes all the visualizations and filters you want to replicate across the other dashboards.
Save and publish the source dashboard to the Power BI service.
In the Power BI service, navigate to the source dashboard and select the "Duplicate Page" option.
Enter a new name for the duplicated dashboard and select "Duplicate". This will create a copy of the source dashboard with the same visualizations and filters.
Repeat step 3 and 4 for each manager's dashboard.
After creating all the duplicated dashboards, you can use the "Apply to Workspace" feature to update the source dashboard with new data.
In the Power BI service, navigate to the source dashboard and select the "Apply to Workspace" option.
Select the dashboards you want to update and select "Apply".
This way, you will have only one dashboard to maintain, and all the duplicated dashboards will be updated automatically with the same visualizations and filters.
Another way is to use a template, where you can create a template with all the visuals and filters you need, and then use this template to create new dashboards.
You can also use a master visual, where you can create a visual that contains all the data you need, and then use this visual in all the dashboards you need.
You can use RLS.
It's also important to note that, if you are using the same dataset for all the dashboards, you might want to make sure that the data is clean and ready for use.
Thanks @jaweher899 I was able to get to step 6. I was unable to locate the 'Apply to Workspace' feature you refernced. I did some testing and it seems any changes to the data source works well. However, if i change a visual, the copy of the dashboard wont update accordingly.
it would be based entirely on the data, let's say if you manually prefiltered the dashboard for person A and B. If you refresh the data - would the new data be filtered automatically? because usually prefiltered only filtered the current data dashboard and you will have to redo the process for refreshing if you don't have the managers db link properly to the rest of the database.
To make it less complicated, do you have a new column for managers' names and are able to allocate data according to each one? That way you can filter by manager per dashboard without worrying about new data not getting filtered. If you do have that column, should be fairly easy to filter within power bi service filter tab and hide the manager filter column and make each dashboard for each manager. additionally, you can add an overview dashboard for the master user with a dropdown to filter specific manager .
