Long running direct query report

I have a report written using direct query. It takes about 3 minutes to refresh when a user opens the report. Is there any value in setting up a scheduled houly refresh of the dataset stored in the workspace? Would that speed up the refresh when the report is openned?

Scheduling will not help at all. However Microsoft have just announced automatic aggregation options that allow you to cache frequent queries, and to potentially improve the user experience.

You will be better off studying the queries that cause the slowness, and improving the performance of your data source.
