Login to your account

Hello,

Every time I open a report on Power BI Desktop, I'm asked to login to my account.

I do.

And then... Power BI asks me to login to my account, over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over.

This has been an issue for me for years, and a waste of valuable time. I've given up trying to understand this, but maybe someone knows the trick?

Thank you so much for any help!

Thanks everyone for helping, but nothing seems to solve the problem.

Even with Power BI Desktop closed, I'm asked to sign in again.

Hi @webportal , thank you for your feedback.

Could you please try using another account or switch to a different computer to compare the results?

Best regards,

Hi @webportal,

try this & let me know if this is worked

The issue of Power BI Desktop repeatedly asking for login credentials is often related to authentication, configuration, or caching problems. Here are some steps to resolve this frustrating issue:

1. Update Power BI Desktop

Ensure you are using the latest version of Power BI Desktop. Microsoft frequently releases updates that include bug fixes and improvements related to authentication.

2. Clear Credentials in Power BI

Sometimes cached credentials or corrupted authentication data cause repeated login prompts. Clearing them can help.

  1. Go to FileOptions and SettingsData Source Settings.
  2. Under Global Permissions, locate the data source(s) prompting the login.
  3. Select it, then click Clear Permissions.
  4. Reconnect the data source and provide the credentials again.

3. Adjust Power BI Account Settings

Power BI Desktop may struggle to maintain a connection to your account if there are mismatches in account configuration.

  1. Sign out completely:
    • Click on your profile in the top-right corner of Power BI Desktop.
    • Choose Sign Out.
  2. Close Power BI Desktop.
  3. Reopen Power BI Desktop and log in again, ensuring the account matches the credentials required for the data sources and your Power BI service.

4. Check Organizational Account Settings

If you're using an organizational account:

  • Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA): If MFA is enabled, Power BI might repeatedly prompt for verification. Ensure your credentials are updated in your organization’s Single Sign-On (SSO) system.
  • Expired Credentials: Update your credentials via the IT department if they’ve expired or been reset.

5. Disable VPN/Proxy Temporarily

Sometimes VPNs or proxies can interfere with Power BI Desktop's ability to authenticate properly. Try:

  • Disabling your VPN or proxy temporarily.
  • Logging into Power BI Desktop without it enabled.

6. Check Browser and Cookie Settings

Power BI Desktop uses a web-based authentication mechanism. Browser-related issues, such as blocked cookies, can interfere.

  1. Open your default browser (e.g., Edge or Chrome).
  2. Clear cookies and cache.
  3. Ensure third-party cookies are allowed.
  4. Log in to Power BI Service using the same account to verify there are no issues with the credentials.

7. Reset Power BI Desktop Authentication Cache

  1. Close Power BI Desktop.
  2. Navigate to the folder:
    • C:\Users\<YourUsername>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Power BI Desktop\
  3. Delete the User.zip file.
  4. Relaunch Power BI Desktop and log in again.

8. Check Network Connectivity

Intermittent connectivity issues may cause Power BI to lose authentication:

  • Ensure stable internet access.
  • Check firewall or security software settings that might block Power BI’s authentication requests.

9. Reinstall Power BI Desktop (if all above is not working, just a give a try you know 😛 )

If none of the above works, perform a clean reinstall:

  1. Uninstall Power BI Desktop.
  2. Remove leftover files from:
    • C:\Program Files\Microsoft Power BI Desktop\
    • C:\Users\<YourUsername>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Power BI Desktop\
  3. Reinstall Power BI Desktop from the official site.

By following these steps, you should be able to resolve the persistent login prompts and work seamlessly in Power BI Desktop.

Hi @webportal ,

for me this happen when i open power bi with no internet connected to do something.

I noticed that when you open power bi ofline, automatically log out from your acount.

When you're online and open power bi again, it wil ask you to login again.

is this your case?

Just to test, try to open your power bi online, and make sure that you are logged in, and close, and reopen again with the internet connected.
