Loading data to power bi from Google bigquery table with policy tags applied on PII elements
Hi All,
There is a technical challenge in power bi while connecting to google bigquery tables with policy tags applied on few fields for security purpose.
Background:
We have added a kind of column level security in the bigquery tables for PII (Personally identifiable information) fields and this is affecting the data load process in power bi saying you don’t have permissions for few fields in a table.
Limitation in PBI: Power BI should allow us to load the table data except the secured fileds.PBI should allow us to load all other fields and create report.
Note: Even though we have added column level security for few fields in bq, tableau supports to create report with all other fields excluding the secured fields without writing custom query.
We expect the same thing to happen in PBI, but it is not so and we can not ask business users to write custom query to load the bq table data without the secured fields.
we don't want to create a view in GCP for each of the tables that needs to be loaded to PBI.
Please help me with this issue

Hello Anonymous
Are you saying that other fields are not available? Can you show the screenshot after connecting?
If this is true, I think it may not be possible to change. You can submit your idea here. Hope it will come true soon.

Providing some more information on the power bi issue.
1.Facing below error while loadind data from bigquery table(applied policy tags on PII field in bigquery table)
2. We can actually exclude those 2 fields with policy tags using custom sql query, but we can't make business users to write the sql query. So,we expect Power BI to provide an option to select the necessary fields before loading just by clicking or any easy way or comfortable option for end users.

Hi, Anonymous
Do you use google bigquery connector to connect? It can use custom sql query. You can try it:

I am aware that we can write custom sql,but we don't want business user to do that and it will be difficult for end users to write sql query.
But my concerns is that in Tableau it allows to load the bigquery table with column level security,it errors only when you try to use the secured field for reporting and most useful part it allows us to create report with all other fileds of the table except the secured ones.
In power bi it's like a show stopper,it does not allow to load anything if we apply column level security on any fields in bigquery table and it's not the expected behavior and very dissapointing. Please suggest if there are any other suggestions apart from writing custom sql and creating separate views in GCP excluding the secured fields of the table (Google cloud platform).
