Line Chart: Trend Line at year but not month level?

I have a year and month hierarchy and when I view a line chart by year I can go to analytics pane and add a trend line.

Then when I do the expand all down one level in hierarchy button (the single line that splits into two like a two pronged fork) the trend line goes away and I can't bring it back under analytics.

Am I missing something basic here...what is going on?

As I tested, the trend line only appear when the category field on X-axis is numeric.

I may not be following:

So then, NOT dates?

If I have Years: 2002, 2003, 2004, etc.... 2017

then drill down to months: 2017-01-01, 2017-02-01, etc... that won't work for Trends?

Power BI Line Chart with Trend line work only for a date as axis. If you use anything line mm/yyyy or not numeric, this function don't works.
