I thought I had posted this yesterday but can find not trace of my previous request.
We have a suite of PBIT files generated from previous versions of PBI Desktop. November 2020.
When we load the PBIT files into January 2021 PBI DEsktop and refresh all the data comes in and there are no errors or warnings. The report can be read and operated correctly.
However when we publish the report the PBI Service we get the Internal Server Error (500).
I have been through all the "CURRENT FILE" settings to make sure I have populated any additional settings in the report that may have not been around in November. Same error.
This just isnt one file. Its PBIT PBIX and a numebr of files - this is not a corrupt report file.
Also tried to upload the file online.
Get Data > Files > Local File, and gets the following error;
Processing error: M Engine error: 'System.Web.Extensions; <pii>Value cannot be null.
Parameter name: input</pii>'.

Client version: 2101.4.04677-train
Cluster URI: https://wabi-south-east-asia-redirect.analysis.windows.net/
This is URGENT for us. We have no connectivity for our content to the service.
Content that worked fine only a week or so ago and prior to the Jan 2021 update of PBI Desktop.
I logged as an issue and heard nothing for 2 weeks !
I have two PBIX files.
One publishes One does not.
I can get the one that errors to publish only by removing the last Query.
However the exact same query resides in the PBIX that does not error - so that in itself cannot be an issue.
This is a serious issue and there is Zero feedback.
How will I know when its resolved
Advise how the files can be provided
Hi @shaunwilks ,
As a workaround,try doing below:
File -> Options and settings -> Options -> Data Load (under global) -> Folded artifacts cache options -> clear cache
Then upgrade the desktop version to the latest one(Feb 2021,2.90).
It should be resolved in the lastest version,if you still have the problem,pls let me know.
Best Regards,
Kelly
Did I answer your question? Mark my post as a solution!
Its worse.
Opening multiple reports which all open in the Jan 2021 Destkop without error and for two years have published without an error.
One report gives me the following updating the MetaData
Failed to save modifications to the server. Error returned: 'M Engine error: 'System.Web.Extensions; Value cannot be null. Parameter name: input'. '.
The other report gives me this error just opening the file

I actually have two reports - once that fails and one that publishes where the only difference is the M script used to source the data from a SQL Server database.
This query allows the report to publish
let
Source = Sql.Database(#"Microsoft SQL Server Name",#"Database Name",
[Query="SELECT * FROM Table where [Field] = '" & #"Field Parameter" & "'", CreateNavigationProperties=false])
in
Source
This query does not allow the report to publish without an error
let
Source = Sql.Database(#"Microsoft SQL Server Name", #"Database Name",
if #"Field Parameter" <> null
then
[Query="SELECT * FROM Table WHERE [Field] = '" & #"Field Parameter" & "'", CreateNavigationProperties=false]
else
[Query="SELECT * FROM Table", CreateNavigationProperties=false])
in
Source
These queries have worked for over 2 years.
These queries work inside the PowerBI Desktop and source the data correctly and filter the query correctly. There is nothing wrong with the M script.
But MS have broken the Service or the metadata in the report as it wont allow the report to publish or upload queries in this structure.
