Issues to convert data type text to date

We have a dataset that looks like the one below being fed to us by a third-party API.

We want to be able to show information such as: on a May 18 2018 how many items were in transit with FedEx.

How would we transform our data to allow such a query or is there a way to build our queries that will allow us to ask such questions?

Serial_Number Record_Date Location Status InTransit

4323	4/12/2018	TULSA WH	Available	false
4323	5/16/2018	FEDEX	Shipped	true

Just try using Slicers in Power BI and FILTER to add a measure.
