I have unchecked the required box when creating a parameter but don't see a difference between when the box is checked. I don't see the ability to not select or type in an input. I'm thinking I am missing something here. I'm also guessing that no matter what the prompt for the parameter will show though.
Thanks.

When you manage the parameter, do you have a current value set?

Thank you. I now see that when the required box is checked you need to set a current value but when it is not checked no current value is needed.
No matter what, a prompt will always display though right?
Also, if I leave the current parameter value box blank I notice that the data on my table becomes empty. For instance, my query parameter returns 3 years (2016, 2017, 2018). The fact table has a year column that is filtered based off this query parameter. Leaving it blank causes the table to be empty. Thus, if you don't have an input required isn't that going to break your model?
Hmmm, this is not my experience with parameters when working with Folder ingests for example. If the parameter current value is set, then it doesn't prompt me for the folder name, for example.
When I open the Power BI file I'm never prompted for a parameter but if I save as a template and open I'm always prompted for a parameter.
Ah, I must have missed the template portion of your question. Yeah, that would definitely be the case.
